**WECB DJ ALBUM REVIEW** Banjo or Freakout

After hearing Banjo Or Freakout's eponymous release, the answer seemed simple: freakout. Having been fooled once by the title of the artist and fooled again by the self-same title of the CD, I was unsure about the contents within. Soon, however, I got into it: Banjo Or Freakout is everything you would expect from a one-man indie band, and then some. Complete with soft vocals, distorted keyboards, and the melancholy angst of an acoustic guitar that never graduated high school, the songs on this CD might remind you of a myriad of other bands- it might even be indistinguishable from a myriad of other bands- but I'm all for variety, and if Italians, experimental electronic vocals, and a lonely melody are the kind of things you're into, there's no reason not to listen to this CD.

Never Let Me Go will host the owner of Weirdo Records in Cambridge in early March for an interview. Boudreau says they will discuss "how an off-the-beaten path record shop is run and how such a unique branch of entertainment can still sell. [Weirdo Records] mainly sells world, experimental, drone, and psychedelic works." Also stay tuned for an interview with Emerson Art of Noise professor, Maurice Methot, airing in late March.

MIXTAPE: Boston + Philadelphia

My favorite distraction from wallowing in my own "I'm sick and tired of being sick and tired" misery is making mixes. Last semester I wrote about the site 8tracks, a place where you can upload your own virtual mix tapes. While wrapped in my Emerson blanket, surrounded by tissues, I made one consisting of some super tracks by local Boston and Philly bands. We'll be incorporating our DIY favorites into our New Music Show on WECB so stay tuned! We're going back on air tomorrow February 1st!

Shilpa Ray & Her Happy Hookers- Teenage & Torture

When it comes to listening to Shilpa Ray & Her Happy Hookers newest release, Teenage & Torture, I'm like a nerd who needs to grab my inhaler every time one track ends and the next begins. I mean, I'm not saying that you're a nerd if you need an inhaler, but you are, and so am I... especially when it comes to this album. Its smokey dive bar infused rock at its finest. Shilpa can switch from intense rip-your head-off screams in "Stick It To The Woman" to velvety jazz vocals in "Dames A Dime A Dozen." My favorite track "Erotolepsy" is a vaudevillian dance tune that highlights Ray's accordion skills. This album is mesmerizing and hold on let me take a breath, an excellent start to the new year.

A collection of the venues we interacted with over the course of this year's CMJ Marathon. We highlighted some of our favorite artists from week, and located the places where we were denied due to age restrictions. We had a wonderful time and met a lot of great people. Hells yea for college radio.
